Choosing a Removals Company
The day you move out of your old home
and into your new one, will be the most stressful day in
the whole moving process. It's not usually a good idea to
attempt to move your furniture and belongings yourself.
You will have enough to do, just in phone calls to solicitors
and estate agents, packing the last few items, cleaning
floors, etc.
So how do you choose a good removals company?
Well, not all removals companies are the
same, so you shouldn't necessarily go with the cheapest
company.

Here are a few pointers;
- V.A.T. Registered - If the remover
is not V.A.T. registered, their annual turnover suggests
they don't carry out many removals, so they are likely
to be inexperienced.
- Operator's Licence - For a company
to operate a vehicle of 7.5T or over they are required
to have an Operator's Licence. If a remover doesn't have
one, they are either breaking the law, or they only have
smaller vehicles, which are unsuitable for all but the
smallest moves.
- Written Quote - You will need a written
quote so you know exactly what you are paying for. Most
good removals companies require you to sign an Acceptance
Form and pay a deposit. This contractually binds them
to turn up and carry out the work.
- Insurance and Waivers - Be sure that
the remover is insured against loss or damage to your
property. Most removers have insurance up to a value of
£25,000. If your belongings are worth more, ask
about increasing the cover. The better companies also
offer a Waiting Time Waiver, which will cover you in case
there is a problem with exchange of keys or transfer of
funds. Waiting time, (or stoppage time) is usually charged
by removers at an hourly rate and can work out very expensive
without the waiver.
- Equipment - Reputable removal
companies carry everything they need to protect your goods
during the move. A well equipped van will have, not just
removal blankets and ties, but furniture wraps, sofa covers
and wardrobe boxes.
If a company isn't in the Yellow Pages
and doesn't have a web site, they're not a serious contender.
Try to avoid the cheap "Man and Van" adverts in
the local paper. Though they are often very good value for
moving a few items, they are seldom equipped to carry out
full house moves.
Finally, when you contact the company,
gauge how friendly and helpful they are on the phone. You
want a company that will put you at ease. Moving home is
a very personal thing, so you want "polite, friendly
and helpful" not "cold, blunt and rigid".
