Jarrow became a significant town in the North
East, in 1803, with the opening of the Jarrow Colliery.
The town was put on the map again in 1936,
when 200 men marched 300 miles to London, in protest at the
poverty and mass unemployment in the North East. This became
known as the Jarrow Crusade.
Jarrow's most famous resident in history
was Bede, the 7th Century theologian and chronicler. Venerable
Bede was possibly born in Jarrow and, after a brief time living
in Wearmouth near Sunderland, returned to Jarrow where he
spent the rest of his life.
Among many other things, Bede is credited
with introducing the words anno domini to refer to
events after the birth of Christ.
